Live in HD – Verdi’s La Traviata
May 5
Sedona Performing Arts Center
Sedona
The fourth most frequently performed opera in the Met’s history (after La Bohème, Aida, and Carmen), La Traviata (March 1853) joins its immediate predecessors Il Trovatore (January 1853) and Rigoletto (1851) to form the trio of great operas of Verdi’s middle period. There are some similarities to the story of Manon, with a heroine (Violetta) of less than perfect reputation who falls in love with a handsome man (Alfredo) whose father (Germont) strongly disapproves. As in many operas, it’s the woman who pays the price in the end, this time dying of consumption. The cast is superb: the title role will be sung by Natalie Dessay who will put on the red dress in Willy Decker’s stunning production, in her first Violetta at the Met. Matthew Polenzani sings Alfredo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky is Germont, and Principal Guest Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.
Approximate running Time: 3 hours 7 minutes (On Air: 10:00 – 1:07pm). One intermission.
