Park After Dark returns this year with a
special evening focused on this rich and eclectic
borderlands celebration. The Día de los
Muertos exhibition in the Main Gallery will be
open with our ever popular community altar (Ofrenda) where visitors can leave a memento
or message for a loved one. We’ve also invited local artists to create individual altars on the grounds to demonstrate their personal vision of this unique holiday. Come and dance to the jazzy salsa sounds of Rafael Moreno and Descarga, get your face painted “calavera” style (skull mask) and shop for Day of the Dead collectibles for your own ofrenda in the La Galeria museum shop.
The Garden Bistro will be selling Mexican street food along with beer and wine. You can also enjoy complimentary popcorn as you and your family stroll the grounds this extraordinary evening in celebration of Day of the Dead.
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated on All Saints’ Day (November 1st) and All Souls’ Day (November 2nd). With roots blending customs from pre-Hispanic and European influences, Día de los Muertos is a family observance which joyfully honors and remembers loved ones who have passed on. It is a poignant time, both solemn and celebratory, with colorful traditions, pageantry, and whimsy. Families clean, paint and decorate graves of relatives and participate in graveside vigils with candles, flowers and music.
