Wickenburg's residents choose this town not just as a place to live, but as a way of life. Known as Arizona's "Most Western Community," the town is rich in lore and romance. Resting on the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, the area's geological treasures attracted miners from all around the world, and the fertile Hassayampa River provided rich land for ranchers to establish their homesteads. For centuries, the Western Yavapai made the banks of this river their home.
Wickenburg History & Culture
Hispanic culture and trade reached the area prior to 1863. During this year, gold searcher and adventurer Henry Wickenburg was rewarded by the discovery of the Vulture Mine, where over $30 million in gold has been dug from the ground. The mining lore of the region, past and present, adds much to the charm of the area. Local landmarks include Vulture Peak, Vulture Mine, Yarnell Hill, Turtleback Mountain, Wickenburg Peak and Date Creek Ranch. Today, the town still cherishes the best traditions of these early days.
