Vail History & Culture
Named for two brothers who arrived in the area in the late 1870s, the Vail area started out as a cattle-ranching and silver-mining region. In 1880, train tracks were laid down east of Tucson, on land donated by Walter Vail, one of the original brothers, who simply asked that there be an official Vail stop along the line. In addition to cattle and silver, Vail also served as the storage and loading facility for ore from the Helvetia Copper Mine, which transported ore to town on mule-pulled wagons. More than 100 years later, the haul road these wagons used is still visible.
