Arizona Office of Tourism Launches “Arizona Passages” to promote 27 Arizona State Parks and the 800-mile Arizona Trail
PHOENIX (June 9, 2008) – With fuel prices reaching an all-time high, many Arizona residents are looking to vacation closer to home this summer. Fortunately, they won’t have to look much further than their own backyards. To encourage travel instate, the Arizona Office of Tourism has teamed up with Arizona State Parks department and the Arizona Trail Association to launch the “Arizona Passages” campaign.
Based on a theme of “Just Feet Away,” Arizona Passages (azpassages.com) is designed to showcase the world-class outdoor recreation available to Arizona residents and highlight the opportunities for unique adventures in nature, history and culture, regardless of their fitness level.
The Passages “new media” website features interactive content and provides the consumer with key information and inspiration to visit outside of major metropolitan areas. The site incorporates third-party content from sites like TripAdvisor, Google Maps, MeetUp and Flickr, and allows visitors to submit their own travel stories and experiences.
Arizona’s media will also be ambassadors of the Passages program as they journal and use photographs to relate their experiences about their adventures in Arizona. Their experiences will focus on visiting the 27 State Parks or hiking the Arizona Trail while encouraging overnight stays in nearby communities.
The 27 State Parks offer a multitude of accommodations, hiking, fishing and specialty activities such as horseback riding, boat tours, or cave tours in Kartchner Caverns. Arizona’s most historic mansions, courthouses, and the Yuma Territorial Prison offer cultural destinations as well.
The Arizona Trail is an 800-mile diverse and scenic pathway organized by 43 segment passages running north and south across Arizona. The trail links deserts, sky islands, plateaus, mountains and canyons as it meanders through diverse landscapes and brings new people into the enchanting small communities along its path.
“By combining the best aspects of the Arizona State Parks and the Arizona Trail Association, this campaign creates a synergy that encourages residents to get out and explore the Grand Canyon State,” said Margie Emmermann, director of the Arizona Office of Tourism. “From hiking and biking to trail running and swimming, their dream summer vacation can be found outside their front door.”
Rounding out the Arizona Passages campaign is a sweepstakes in which the winner will get a houseboat adventure on Lake Powell. Additional prizes include gift cards to the IMAX Theatre at Arizona Mills as well as to Summit Hut in Tucson. Participants can register by visiting www.azpassages.com and clicking on the “Arizona Passages Adventure Sweepstakes” banner.
Created as an executive agency in 1975, the Arizona Office of Tourism is charged with enhancing the state economy and the quality of life for all Arizonans by expanding travel activity and increasing related revenues through tourism promotion and development. AOT works to serve the Grand Canyon State’s travel industry and related businesses, the traveling public, and the taxpayers of Arizona.
