The trail is part of a planned 600 mile-long historic trail from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico to San Francisco, California and follows the 1775-76 route of Juan Bautista de Anza who led 240 colonists north from Tubac to establish a settlement that later became San Francisco.
